What is ADHD?
Tics are involuntary, repetitive movements (motor tics) or sounds (phonic tics) that a child cannot control. They typically begin around the age of 5 and may improve over time with appropriate therapy.
Tics can occur without a clear reason, but they may also be triggered by factors like stress or anxiety. Common examples of tics in children include:
-
Repeated blinking
-
Head banging
-
Finger clicking
-
Repeating certain sounds or phrases
-
Nose wrinkling
Tics are often associated with underlying mental health conditions, such as anxiety. Addressing and treating the anxiety can help reduce the severity or frequency of the tics. Other common co-occurring conditions include ADHD and OCD.
